I am reminded today, MLK Day, of the importance of civil disobedience. To be called “disobedient”- it’s an effective form of shaming, isn't it? It's a deterrent, as if to say, “you, you have chosen to disrupt the order of things and the lives of others. How dare you be so selfish”. The fear of shame itself is often what prevents us from taking action. When I think of Martin Luther King Jr., the first thing that comes to mind is the power of peaceful non-violent protest, and Dr. King’s courage employing it in the face of violence. But to leave it at “peaceful non-violent protest” does a notional disservice to the true courage of the man and the movement - the leaders and marchers were first and foremost, in the eyes of their oppressors, disobedient. They were disrupting the status quo, no matter the peaceful means by which they did so. Who do we “obey” and why? And at what point does obedience become complicity in the hatred, violence, and injustice directed towards others? Dr. King reminds me of the responsibility we all share in defining and protecting our moral culture, as well as the dignity that can be found in disobedience. I’ll be holding the spirit of disobedience in my heart this week, especially this weekend when I join the Los Angeles satellite of the Women’s March on Washington (hope you join too). And as we look ahead and anticipate some of the hateful and discriminatory laws proposed and already enacted by our lawmakers and the incoming administration (laws over-regulating women’s bodies, laws supporting and strengthening the mass incarceration of people of color, the “First Amendment Defense Act”, and laws that reek of kowtows to corporate lobbyists over the wellbeing of the public), I do not plan to abide or entirely obey these laws or their makers, for “any law that degrades human personality is unjust”. I will be proudly disobedient. Stay safe, protect each other. We’re all we’ve got. Happy #MLK Day ❤ #blacklivesmatter #lovewins #heforshe
