Residential and commercial development is reducing mountain lion distribution through habitat alteration and destruction, particularly along the western border of the Wasatch Mountains in northern and central Utah. It is in these mountains that the first work with mountain lion in Utah was conducted by houndsman and district Predatory Animal and Rodent Control agent, Edward Connolly, who used snow tracking to evaluate predation rates and prey selection.
The advent of radio-telemetry in the 1960’s allowed us to have a much more detailed view of mountain lion behaviour. As a predator of mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and livestock, many hunters and farmers consider them to be a pest. However, when prey survival is not a concern, they are considered as a trophy game species. Under both conditions, the ability to estimate and track changes in local populations is now more than ever crucial to the survival of the species.
