"Free climbing new lines is always a humbling and exciting experience. 'Spire it Up' is an A4 aid-climb established in the 90's on the NW face of Higher Cathedral Spire. For years I've been drawn to the clean dihedral of the first few pitches and wondered if the remaining blank face pitches would be climbable. In 2016 I explored this vertical terrain for many days, finding that some of the pitches go free, some of them don't. I committed to a ground up style of climbing, which put me in some 'heady' positions as I transitioned from free-climbing to hybrid-aid climbing. In this picture from the 4th pitch, I've abandoned my aid-climbing ladders below and committed to a long section of free-climbing up the 5.11 dihedral. Ultimately I was able to free the first two pitches at 5.13, which I consider to be a nice 'mini-route' addition to the Cathedral Gully. Hopefully in 2017 I'll be able to find a way around some of the 'impossible' sections I've encountered this year. Many thanks to Todd Bol for the long hours on belay and to @cheynelempe for the remarkable camera skills." - @benjaminbditto
