Jean Dubuffet’s l'Homme au Papillon, 1954, is a 50’s masterpiece set to be unveiled at Sotheby’s New York on 2 February. 1954 was an important year for #Dubuffet; he travelled frequently from his home in #Paris to Claremont-Ferrand, where his wife was recovering from illness in a sanatorium. The #countryside features heavily in the artist’s work from this period; in the words of the critic Roberta Smith, “he turned to nature with ferocious and inventive delight”. Few have the intensity of #colour of this #painting, which was one of the first four works bought by the artist's biggest patron in the United Kingdom, the understated but legendary EJ Power. Power played a leading role in the instigation and curation of Dubuffet’s landmark retrospective at the Tate in 1966, in which this painting featured.
