A lady in a Los Angeles Starbucks just asked to pay for my drink because she wanted to "pay it forward". Such a random act of kindness is in stark contrast to the premeditated venom which feels like it's trying to erode not only this country but our society as a whole. I'm not an American citizen but I do visit often and I'm always humbled by the kindness and generosity of these people. It goes so much deeper than political ideologies and spans every color and creed. I avoid making political statements on here because I think actions usually speak louder than words and pictures of cats speak loudest of all, but I just wanted to share this tiny expression of generosity because it is indicative of this nation, and a world in which I want to live. It is the people that made this country great and their goodness is indomitable; it's at the core of America and always will be. In response to her gesture and my belief that we need to fight as hard to maintain our rights, as the people who won them, I made a small donation to the American Civil Liberties Union. But whether you go on a march, give to a charity or just do something nice for a stranger, please remember that this is a fight in which we're all soldiers and kindness is our most powerful weapon.
