Heading to #maketu for the Waitangi holiday weekend. My great great great grandfather and grandmother are in this picture. Pokiha Taranui was the paramount chief of Te Arawa. He was a reknowned leader & fierce warrior. It was said that Te Arawa would not go to war unless he was leading them. My great great great grandmother looks even tougher. When Pokiha was near to death he offered his wharenui (the traditional carved house in the picture) for a proper traditional British military funeral procession. That whare is currently on show at the Auckland Museum just to the left of the main entrance opposite the waka (war canoe).
