#IrvingPenn shot his first couture portfolio for Vogue in 1950 in a studio located on the day-lit top floor of an old photography school on the rue de Vaugirard in Paris. The images he shot there, and which appeared in the September 1, 1950 issue, have become iconic. In this one, Lisa Fonssagrives, the future Mrs. Penn, wears Cristóbal Balenciaga’s mantle coat, described by Vogue as having “the sculptural, direct beauty of a Roman toga,” with the elegant, arched-brow hauteur that came to define the Golden Age of Couture.
