The #GermanExpressionist Max Beckmann was born on this day in 1884. Several of Beckmann’s paintings were included in the Nazis’ 1937 "Degenerate Art" exhibition, a show of modern #painting and #sculpture condemned by Hitler. Although Beckmann rarely explained the iconography in his paintings, the triptych "Departure" is commonly regarded as an artistic response to Hitler’s rise to power.
