A little #bluesday inspiration from #BKMEuropeanart: During the Renaissance, the Virgin was not the only figure depicted in blue robes. In this painting, Venus—the Roman Goddess of Love—is draped in blue; however, here the color is not spiritual, but rather worldly. The bright blue most likely signaled the luxury of an expensive pigment, as well as the carnality and sensuality of the partially draped goddess. Mars, the Roman God of War, was one of the lovers of Venus. Here Mars is alert and armed, his spear standing erect, while Venus is nude and demure, seeming to show us her nude backside almost by accident. ⠀
