The Guggenheim honors #BlackHistoryMonth with a look at recent exhibitions and acquisition of works by African American artists. #CarrieMaeWeems's 2006 series "Roaming" was featured in her 2014 retrospective at the Guggenheim. In the large-scale black and white photographs, Weems appears dressed in a long dark dress standing before monumental architecture and sweeping landscapes in and around Rome. Her back to the camera, she confronts these sites and invites the viewer to share her perspective—and her position as a black female—in relation to these historically charged locales.
