Today is the 75th anniversary of Order 9066, authorizing the mass internment of Japanese American families, including mine. In 1942, wartime fear was in full effect. My Japanese family members, all upstanding American citizens, were removed from their homes and put into dirty horse stalls at the Santa Anita race track, before being shipped off the the middle of the desert in Poston, Arizona, until further notice. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you, on behalf of my family, to everyone who stood up for the Japanese Americans; to everyone who fought for our rights during that difficult time; and years later, to everyone who wisely and honorably worked to acknowledge this event as a mistake. In 1988, President Reagan signed a bill of public apology and reparations for the internment. He had the following to say about it: "The Members of Congress and distinguished guests, my fellow Americans, we gather here today to right a grave wrong. More than 40 years ago, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry living in the United States were forcibly removed from their homes and placed in makeshift internment camps. This action was taken without trial, without jury. It was based solely on race, for these 120,000 were Americans of Japanese descent...what is most important in this bill has less to do with property than with honor. For here we admit a wrong; here we reaffirm our commitment as a nation to equal justice under the law.”
