FT: Newcastle 2-0 Villa - A goal either side of half-time condemned Villa to a 2-0 defeat on Tyneside. After Jonathan Kodjia’s deflected effort was touched over by Karl Darlow, Yoan Gouffran fired the hosts in front from close range to give Newcastle a 1-0 half-time lead. Just after the break, Sam Johnstone produced a fine save to keep out Jonjo Shelvey’s free-kick then, moments later, the hosts doubled their lead when Henri Lansbury inadvertently touched a corner into his own net. Birkir Bjarnason was denied one-on-one by Darlow while Kodjia arrowed a volley just over the bar as the visitors tried to manufacture a route back into the match but couldn’t find a way through the Newcastle backline.
