The canals and island farms of #Xochimilco in southern Mexico City are all that remain of an extensive network of shimmering waterways that awed Spanish invaders 500 years ago. But the fragility of the area was revealed last month, when a 20-feet-deep hole opened in the canal bed, draining water and alarming tour boat operators, as well as farmers who depend on the waterways to grow rosemary, corn and chard. As bucolic as the canals look, intense exploitation of the area’s aquifers has depleted springs, prompting the authorities to replenish the waterways from a nearby sewage treatment plant. Treated water pumped into the canals from nearby Iztapalapa contains heavy metals. What’s worse: Illegal dwellings dump raw sewage into the canals, affecting fish and crops.
