Image by @Joel Sartore | An Arctic fox at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo in Kansas. These little animals live in incredibly frigid environments and have evolved in many ways to survive there. Their multilayered fur coats (which change color with the seasons- from white when it's snowy to brown when the tundra is bare) are extremely dense and insulating, and their paws have fur on the soles. They’ve even developed a system of countercurrent heat exchange in the circulation of their paws to maintain their core temperature.
The Arctic fox serves as a great reminder that “it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself”.
