Butterfly take flight: Andy Warhol’s flawlessly slick #print, San Francisco Silverspot, dated ’83, shows the artist as absolute technical master of the technique he pioneered. He re-imagines the endangered Silverspot #butterfly, implementing a palette of Day-Glo colours, characteristic of his distinct #Pop aesthetic, to show it fluttering gracefully among a sea of grass. San Francisco Silverspot is bejewelled with brilliant reds, greens, blues, and yellows. While painterly in essence, the graphic quality is still palpable through the vivid and expressive movement of line in the work.
