Even though the process of dolphin capture in Taiji, Japan has been universally condemned, IMATA stands by its policy and allows its members to stand side-by-side with the dolphin hunters, choosing which dolphins live and die.
If IMATA stopped supporting the hunts, it would make it very difficult for aquariums in the Middle East and China (the major buyers of Taiji dolphins) to source the animals. This drop in demand would certainly cause the hunters to think twice about starting their boats again come September.
When it comes to dolphin and whale protection in the U.S., the movement is steadily growing. Documentaries like Blackfish have helped to educate people about the harmful effects of captivity and the lies marine parks like SeaWorld tell in order to dupe unknowing consumers.
For now, they’ve got six months until the hunting season starts again.
