Tonight, a glitzy, big-budget, classic Hollywood movie musical with A-list actors called "La La Land" went into the #Oscars with a jaw-dropping amount of nominations. It was, so the critics said, Academy Awards fodder — the perfect formula for an epic win.
But, despite the incredibly awkward mix-up of two Oscars presenters, La La Land did not take home the award for Best Picture. That went to #Moonlight, a limited-release, low-budget passion project about the coming of age of a young black male in Miami. The film was lauded for its honesty surrounding complicated themes like sexuality, drug addiction, and racism — but in the world of #OscarsSoWhite, it was the clear underdog of the evening. Still, this previously untold, overlooked, yet all-too-common story finally got its due. And its Oscar.
This is a reminder that every story is worth telling. And even if it seems like nobody is listening now, you have to hold on — because you have to remember — some day, all of the world's brightest stars might be cheering you on.
Congratulations to the Moonlight cast and crew, including the lovely #AshtonSanders, photographed here by @jeffhenny for our new issue. ?????????
