#BornOnThisDay: The master of searing emotion and psychological intensity, Oskar #Kokoschka's #Orpheus und Eurydike will be offered in this evening's #London sale. The painting relates to the #Greek #myth of the demi-God musician, who journeyed to the underworld to rescue his lover, only to have her taken away from him when they were on the brink of freedom. This tragedy had particular resonance for the artist, still deeply obsessed and mourning the end of his turbulent love affair with Alma #Mahler. One of the most famous #muses of the 20th-century, Alma shared her first kiss with Gustav #Klimt and had been married to renowned composer Gustav Mahler. During the final months of the war, Kokoschka was convalescing from injuries sustained on the front line, and began to write a theatrical autobiographical adaptation of the myth. #SothebysImpMod #GermanExpressionism
