#SpeakingInDance | Next week, Richard Move is performing in his ethereal new dance-theater work “XXYY” at @nylivearts. Inspired by the castrato Alessandro Moreschi and Ralph Werther’s “Autobiography of an Androgyne,” which was written at the turn of the 20th century, “XXYY” blends movement and text to explore gender issues, alienation and repression. “I’m kind of morphing between the androgyne and the castrato throughout the piece,” Richard said of his role. In one section, the dancer @catherinecabeen performs as if she's stuck inside a tiny box. “That confinement definitely connects to an emotional sense of being trapped,” she said. Circling her: the dancer @kathcrockett and Richard. “We’re further confining her,” Richard explained. The work has taken on a darker edge since the presidential election, but his mission is the same. “I like to think we give voice to these obscure people,” he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “Individuals who were living way on the margins.” @gwbitz took took this #video for our weekly series, #SpeakingInDance.
