Mes Aynak (Pashto: ‫مس عينک‬‎, meaning "little source of copper") is a significant archaeological site 40km (25 mi) southeast of Kabul, Afghanistan. The site contains the country's largest copper deposit, as well as the remains of an ancient settlement with over 400 Buddhist statues, stupas and a monastery complex. Archaeologists are only beginning to find remnants of an older 5,000-year-old Bronze Age site beneath the Buddhist level, including an ancient copper smelter. The site's orientation on the Silk Road has yielded a mixture of elements from Iran, China and India. In 2007 a lease was sold to a Chinese state-owned mining company to exploit the copper reserves beneath the site.
Here, a stupa at Site 007 looking south. This site is currently outside the Red Zone so archaeological work here has been delayed in favour of more urgent areas.
