#BarbaraJonesHogu’s print "Unite" speaks just as poignantly to issues of racial, gender, and economic justice as it did during the Black Power Movement. Jones-Hogu was a co-founder of the Black Arts Movement collective AfriCOBRA which was committed to making socially-responsible, community-oriented art, and used screenprints as a democratic form of art to reach wider audiences. Active during the same period were numerous artist-activist groups that were all successful in using collective actions and protests to combat racism and sexism in the art world and in the predominantly white and middle-class second wave feminist movement. See Jones-Hogu's work, alongside works from several other black women artists and activists, next month in #wewantedarevolution—opening April 21. #5womenartists
