A selection of Photographs by Simon Norfolk @simonnorfolkstudio Mes Aynak is a significant archaeological site 40km (25 mi) outside Kabul, Afghanistan. The area contains the country's largest copper deposit, as well as the remains of an ancient settlement with hundreds of Buddhist statues, stupas and a monastery complex. In 2007 a lease was sold to a Chinese state-owned mining company to exploit the copper reserves beneath the site. Here a selection of Archaeological objects from the dig, kept in the National Museum of Afghanistan, juxtaposed with portraits of some of the labourers excavating the site. Many workers are ambivalent about the history they’re helping bring to light, feeling no personal connection to a pre-Islamic past. It doesn’t help that the Taliban have threatened some workers, accusing them of promoting Buddhism. Still, there’s admiration for the achievements of the past. “My forefathers were Muslim,” says one labourer and Afghan Army veteran who gave his name only as Javed. “But we know a lot of generations passed through this land. When I'm working, I'm imagining that here was a civilisation, …kings here. Yes, this is Afghanistan also.” Follow @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material. @instituteartist @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti @natgeo @thephotosociety #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #archaeology #monastery #afghanistan #MesAynak #buddha #buddhism #history #worldheritage #heritage #simonnorfolkstudio #buddhist #documentary #reportage #museum #artefacts #artifacts #portraits #islam #muslim #afghanhistory
