"Like many people, I was fired up the day after the D.C. women’s march. I wanted to do something, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I assessed my skills: I’m a decent writer, and I have excellent penmanship (although I’ve been told it looks like the work of a sociopath). So I decided to write a postcard a day to the people in charge for the first 100 days of Trump’s term. My motto: Always respectful, mostly disagreeable—and thus, @100postcards was born. This week I’ll hit the halfway mark. So far I’ve written to the obvious suspects (Donald Trump, Mike Pence, Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer), to my own elected officials (Chris Christie, Cory Booker, Robert Menendez) and to my personal heroes (Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand). I tell these folks what’s on my mind (not always my forte), I ask them to make the right decisions, and I thank them for being decent human beings (if they are). I haven’t received any responses—I don’t expect to since I don’t include my address on the postcards—but so far the project has been both therapeutic and enlightening. I will never, ever again think of the government as someone else’s problem. Politicians work for us. They need to know what's important to us.
