#SpeakinginDance | Why is it so fun to be bad? In Mark Morris’s spare and riveting 1989 “Dido and Aeneas,” Laurel Lynch plays both the stoic queen of Carthage and the poisonous Sorceress, who will stop at nothing to bring the queen down. “The Sorceress delights in wickedness,” said Laurel, a @markmorrisdance dancer. “She’s greedy, envious, lustful — it’s actually a relief to just let it go.” Originally, the 2 roles were performed by #MarkMorris himself, but they have since been interpreted by both men and women. So far, the common thread is height and hair. Laurel is tall, but needed some length in the hair department. As the Sorceress, she dons a wig. “I go from being bound up to letting everything down,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. The hair “gets in my face. It makes everything feel darker.” She laughed nervously. “I have accidentally whacked people.” @sbrackbill made this #video of Laurel as the Sorceress for our weekly series exploring the world of dance.
