This is my older brother Eric. Thought I’d write a bit about him on what would’ve been his 55th birthday. He’s been on my mind. I know this pic is dated, but it’s the most recent one I have. He’s 19 here, sitting fetchingly in the weeds. He makes me happy. He’s handsome, right? Going through his effects, his driver’s license said he was 5’8”, 140 lbs. Shocked the skinny six-footer I had just stretched into. My big brother! He was kind and understood softness, this creature. Only one of us who got mom’s brown eyes. Perfect nose. Rockstar lips. He was quiet and could play bass to every song on the radio it seemed. He liked singing harmony. He walked funny. Liked making up stories. Peacemaker in the house between two hot-headed younger brothers. I feel like he mighta had a few wives by now, a few kids, too, although his future will remain a mystery. College wasn’t part of his plan so he took a job at a plastics factory making what seemed like insane cash to my early ‘80s, orchard-boy, sprinkler-pipe-movin’ mind. One weekend, him and his buddy had too much to drink and hopped in a car to go to a neighboring town half an hour away. I remember the first real date I had was Friday, November 6, early in my senior year. I was almost 17. I didn’t generate a lotta interest from the ladies, but Shannon was amazing and took a chance. Still smiling when I pulled the Oldsmobile into the driveway and found a police cruiser and a Camaro blocking me. Poor cop had trouble finding our house and had asked Mrs. Fitchett to show him the way. (Wonder what THAT conversation was like when she answered his midnight ring?) I walked through our front door, my face a question mark, into a world that would never be the same again. I remember November 6. (Ran out of space here.
