Avec ce tableau, présenté tardivement au Salon de 1828, Delaroche inaugurait un genre nouveau et typiquement romantique : "le genre historique''. Une scène pathétique et austère, qui fait la part belle aux costumes pittoresques et aux accessoires et traitée dans un format monumental : les fondements d'une nouvelle peinture d'histoire sont posés. ? With this painting lately exhibited at the 1828 Salon, Paul Delaroche launched a new painting genre, typically Romantic: the “historical genre”.
