The YUS Conservation Area was created in 2009 to safeguard this species' environment through 78,700 hectares of tropical rainforest. This place is so remote you can only access it by small planes, usually chartered. However, the human population is growing rapidly and the Huon Tree Kangaroo is threatened by overhunting by local people, and habitat loss due to conversion of forest to subsistence agriculture. YUS is a community based conservation area and Papua New Guinea's first of its kind, in partnership with the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Project (TKCP). That said, I found this otherwise outstanding plan to be poorly managed, socially unresponsive and hard to reach out to. Eco initiatives may very well boost and strengthen protection for this adorable flagship species, as in the case of Birds of Paradise"
