Perhaps more than any other artist, Titian redefined 16th-century Italian painting.
This portrait was first attributed to Titian in 1957, but disappeared from view in the 1960s. When it reappeared at a small auction in Geneva in 2013, it was mistaken for a work by one of his followers – but recent research concludes that the portrait can officially be attributed to Titian.
Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian (Pieve di Cadore c. 1485/90-1576 Venice), Portrait of Gabriele Giolito de’ Ferrari (c. 1508-1578), three-quarter-length. Oil on canvas. 45½ x 37⅛ in (115.6 x 94.3 cm). Estimate: $600,000-800,000.
