Photo by @amivitale. Rescued elephant calves bonding at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), part of the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in the Mathews Range of Northern Kenya. Elephant calves are orphaned or abandoned resulting from a variety of instances that include poaching, man-made wells, drought, human-wildlife conflict and natural mortality. Between 5 and 10 elephant calves are rescued in Northern Kenya annually, from a population estimated at 8,700. There are currently 12 rescued elephants living at Reteti, and the highly trained staff have been especially skilled at returning calves to their wild herds.
