Hockney’s swimming pool paintings are iconic and seeing ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’ up close in real scale at the Tate was inspiring in every sense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have a habit of seeing everything as food and the chocolate brown tiles bordering the aqua marine mass of the pool immediately made me think of tiles of chocolate. Grouted together with ganache or caramel... This thought led me on to create square tiles of millionaires shortbread using the three components in the bake to re-produce the swimming pool tile formation. Using actual swimming pool tiles to present them on and produce this image helps to both highlight the inspiration and give a nod to Hockney’s signature use of grids.
