Penguin poop in Antarctic lake sediments helped researchers chart the history of a colony of gentoo penguins with censuslike precision. By combining chemical analyses of this sediment with an estimate of the average gentoo’s guano “productivity,” the researchers were able to determine Ardley Island’s historic penguin occupancy with censuslike precision.
