I was super saddened to hear of legendary mastering engineer Tom Coyne's passing yesterday. For those of us in the music world where sonics is EVERYTHING, Tom was truly a master. After seeing his name on so many favored albums, I first had the honor of working with him on "Jazz Brat" back in 1995 and he quickly became the mastering engineering of choice until 2002. I loved sitting in on the mastering sessions and seeing/hearing the "master" at work. He was not shy about pumping the bottom, but at the same time the rest of the layers somehow came alive, and there was a subtlety to what he did that was inexplicable. Some of my prized memories were when he had inputs like "I hear inflections of Eryka Badu" and "Have you considered an entire album of this type of stuff?" (to my more alter-Jazz-fusion-downtempo-chill music leanings). My recording budget downsized and my overall sound/genre identity changed over time, but my overwhelming respect and love for Tom never waned. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. #rip
