Today, I signed an Executive Order, “Improving Accountability and Whistleblower Protections at the Department of Veterans Affairs.” The Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Shulkin, has been working closely with your Administration to fulfill your promises to fix the broken VA, restore accountability, and provide America’s Veterans the world-class care and service that they have earned.
Personnel accountability within the VA has been problematic and VA employee whistleblowers have brought this to the media and to the attention of the country. But, the VA has retaliated against the employees with harassment, insurmountable work tasks, and by placing employees under unwarranted surveillance.
Establishing this new VA Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection ensures the removal and discipline of federal employees and managers who have violated the public’s trust and protects honest employees who highlight wrongdoing. It sends a strong message to veterans, employees and the public that this administration will not tolerate business as usual, and that the Secretary will have all the tools he needs to terminate poor managers and employees while rewarding high performing employees.
