@lauraboushnak photographed Haifaa and Mahdiya Ibrahim, 2 sisters, taking a walk in #Weimar, Germany, after their #German language class. “I have to learn the language so I can get a job,” Haifaa said. Unlike most of the roughly 95,000 refugee women who poured into Germany in 2015, the 2 women and their sister Schireen came without husbands, fathers or brothers. Haifaa, the oldest, came up with the idea. Her husband was killed in Syria’s civil war. Schireen, the youngest, was game to go along in the hope of continuing her education. And Mahdiya, the middle sister, worried about the journey, but remarks made by Chancellor Angela Merkel (@アンゲラ・メルケル) persuaded her to make the trek. Every morning, Haifaa drops off her children at school and then heads to class. “When I get on the bus, I greet the driver in German, ‘Guten Morgen.’ He never greets me back,” she said. “He will greet the people before me or after me, never me. But every day, I keep greeting him. I won’t stop.” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists spent months examining integration in #Weimar. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
