Dog. I'm 13 again. Just heard "We Can F%+€" from the reissued (assumed?) Purple Rain lp & man. in 93 I jumped in the lake of music i traded my passion for listening to music to creating music. it was just as euphoric. but clearly a line drawn in the sand. can't be a fan & an artist at same time. No amount of ODing on Coltrane or EWF or Stevie or Nina prepped me for Prince. His presentations are so multi layered like a 3 Michelin Star meal: his rhythm layer sounds & feels unique. But then his harmony game is just as rich. then him as a musician sneaking stuff in the average cat won't think of. (not even mention vocals & "what's he gonna say next!?" lyrics.---it's a rich experience) & you keep askin "is this allowed to happen?" You hear something new everytime. My first "oh s&%!!!!!*" moment was the #LittleRedCorvette rmx. prior to this people just extended/edited their music w more cowbell to keep disco patrons happy (good example? @TheJacksons #ShakeYourBodyDown rmx. Gold Standard level of edit excellence) but "Corvette"? jesus. Prince INVENTED the remix. he recontextualized the last two mins from its familiar rockfish C#m to its relative minor key of Bb. Singlehandedly turning an AM radio pop ditty into the funkiest blackest jawn ever. Like how can a minor adjustment turn a rock song into a funk song? I was wrestling w this the entire summer of 83. NOONE was thinking on that level (he pulled the same amazing trick on the #RaspberryBeret remix molding its key of A into a G# funkathon) hearing the 10 min original "We Can..." is taking me back to my childhood in which you just ---discovered joy in listening to music. sorry to get all emo at 3am but trust me, if social media was a thing in the 80s id write more about the cool stuff i discovered w the passion i put into saying goodbye to the greats. its been forever since a song froze me. its been even longer since a Prince song did this to a cat who has been numb to music for the last few. I'm revealing in this moment cause its rare. and who knows when i'll thaw again?
