This cute "dog head" baby bonnet was worn by little Peter Lee as a kid in New York.
Chinese mothers traditionally dressed their one year old children in such bonnets to protect them from evil spirits. According to lore, if evil forces met the child they would pass by, thinking it were an animal, and of no value.
Peter's family lived above their store at 32 Mott Street and Peter was one of seven children. The next photo shows members of the Lee family around 1920.
We have many other pieces of the family's clothing in our collection. They were donated by one of the children, Virginia Lee Mead (she wasn't born in time for this family photo). The family imported many articles of clothing from China that were worn on special occasions; otherwise, the children and businessman Mr. Lee dressed in Western-style attire for daily wear. The mother of the family continued to wear traditional Chinese dress most of her life. Their clothing reflects diverse Chinese and American cultural traditions.
