'The whole world is made of stone. It is our fundament. When I tap it, I get an echo of that which we are' – Isamu Noguchi

Born in Los Angeles to an American mother and Japanese father, Noguchi lived in Japan until he was thirteen and returned to the country often during his long life. Japan’s many gardens — whether contemplative and spiritual or abstract and idealized — would inspire Noguchi throughout his career and drive many of his sculptures across the world.

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988). Garden Elements, 1958. Two elements of Mannari granite. Larger element: 102 x 27 x 12 1/2 in. (259 x 68.5 x 31.7 cm.); smaller element: 36 x 66 1/2 x 8 in. (91.4 x 168.9 x 20.3 cm.) Estimate: $1,000,000–1,500,000.

Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale – 17 May at Christie’s New York.
