When I was about 10, my brother was bitten by a wolf. His name was Lefty. Lefty had been saved: taken out of forced domesticity and brought to our place to nurse back to health and rerelease. My brother was walking along the top of the fence, and Lefty somehow had gotten into the garden. He lept up and grabbed my brother and proceeded to drag him around the garden. A ranchhand, Norman, and I were planting flowers on the perimeter of the fence, and we heard the screams: a six year old being mauled by a wolf. Norman jumped over the fence and saved my brother. Bleeding from several punctures of the leg, my brother was carried in to my mother, me flanking him. She was on the phone, Dr. Pepper in one hand, lit Kool King in the other.
