50 years ago, the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force hoisted its ensign over Telok Ayer Basin for the first time. It had just 2 wooden ships: the RSS Panglima and the RSS Bedok. This was how the @SingaporeNavy started. Today, the RSN is an advanced fighting force, with submarines, frigates, and unmanned vessels and aircraft. It has deployed to counter-piracy missions in the Arabian Gulf, and search-and-rescue operations after aircraft accidents. This morning, I was proud to commission the latest addition to the fleet: RSS Independence, the first of our Littoral Mission Vessels (LMV). But what makes the RSN a formidable fighting force is not just state-of-the-art vessels, but the dedication and fighting spirit of the men and women of the Navy.
