The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest Anglo-Saxon hoard ever found in the UK, and contains thousands of individual objects! Cloisonné pieces like these are brilliant examples of 6th–7th-century craftsmanship. Cloisonné is a technique of decorating metalwork by inlaying materials – like the garnet gemstone used here – to create beautifully intricate patterns. The inlaid materials were called cloisons, the French word for ‘compartments’. The hoard was found in 2009, and is one of the Treasure finds that has been selected to celebrate two decades of the Treasure Act.
