A group of Florida Manatees socialize in the clear, shallow waters of Crystal River, Florida. Though recently reclassified by the State of Florida from endangered to a threatened, Florida Manatees are still susceptible to a variety of threats; from loss of sea grass, to ‘red tide’ and boat strikes. At least 80% of Florida manatees have been hit by boats, some repeatedly and bear scars on their bodies.

These “sea cows” communicate with one another through touch, as well as through patterns of squeaks and squeals. Such signals allow a mother to recognize her calf, and thus to teach the calf necessary survival skills early in life.
