Photograph by @Paulnicklen// 10 years ago, I released this photograph of a male narwhal with a cod stuck to it. At the time, I hypothesized that narwhals use their tusks in a side-to-side slicing motion to stun and injure polar cod. I based this hypothesis on several fish that I found stuck to their tusks. I also based it on how I watched sailfish use their bills to slice through sardine schools in a similar fashion. And, of course the Inuit have known this for centuries. Thank you at @ナショナルジオグラフィック for giving me the opportunity to spend time in the field and witness these great moments in nature. Please follow me on @paulnicklen to see pictures of narwhals underwater. #narwhals #unicornsofthesea #nature
