Once the buckwheat is harvested around the Togakushi area, soba noodles made using the fresh harvest are presented to the deity at the middle shrine at Togakushi Shrine on October 31 each year. Nagano is known for its delicious soba, so be sure to give it a try—it's even available right at the shrine!

Togakushi Shrine's Middle Shrine (Chu-sha Shrine) is separated from its Upper and Lower shrines by 2 kilometers of trails in either direction. Located in Myoko-Togakushi renzan National Park, the shrine traces its origins all the way back to the creation myths of Japan: when the sun goddess hid herself away in a cave in Kyushu, another god tossed the stone door away, and it's said to have landed here. 'Togakushi' literally means 'hidden door.'
