"My forms are geometric, but they don't interact in a geometric sense. They're just forms that exist everywhere, even if you don't see them"—artist Ellsworth Kelly born today in 1923. In his work Kelly abstracts the forms in his paintings from observations of the real world, such as shadows cast by trees or the spaces between architectural elements. In 1996 the Guggenheim hosted his career retrospective, which filled our rotunda with color.
