This species is among the longest salamanders, capable of growing up to 1 meter long. They can be found in marshes, lakes, streams and floodlands in the United States and are named for the three toes on each of their four vestigial (remnant) legs. Three-toed amphiumas are nocturnal and carnivorous, mostly active in the middle of the night as they hunt for crayfish and other swimming animals to eat.
