For a few months in 2013, @robinpecknold lived alone in a small house in Port Townsend, a wind-swept town a 2-hour ride from Seattle. He spent his days taking a woodworking course; most nights, he went for long runs. It was a curious place to find the lead singer and sole songwriter of @fleetfoxes, whose first 2 albums have sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. But @robinpecknold’s life ran aground during the making of the #indierock band’s Grammy-nominated 2011 album “Helplessness Blues.” His focus and his constant interrogation of his own motivations and self-worth made for compelling music but toxic living. When the band’s new album, “Crack-Up,” is released in a couple of weeks, #FleetFoxes will return with a weighty, ambitious album. It’s a defiant artistic statement — an album that dares to feel important. The name? A nod to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1936 essay chronicling the author’s own existential crisis.
