For the brand new #TeenVogueMusicIssue, we caught up with #DearEvanHansen star #MikeFaist, whose big Broadway role didn't come easy. “I graduated high school a year early and moved to New York when I was 17 to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. I dropped out after two semesters and started selling tickets in Times Square for off- Broadway plays while auditioning on the side. After a few nonunion shows, I got booked as the understudy for the lead of Newsies. I was in the original Broadway cast for about a year and a half. It was a dream come true. Now, three years later, I’ve really gotten to grow with the role of Connor, who commits suicide in the play. In order to formulate who Connor would be, I read stories by real suicide-attempt survivors on a website, livethroughthis.org. I realized that there seems to be a general lack of self-love and empathy in our society. I hope that when people see the show, they’ll say, ‘Oh, I am loved.
