(swipe to see how diverse they can be) Coral reefs grow extremely slowly-- it can take between 100,000 and 30 million years for one to fully mature. But when they do form, they host some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Although they cover less than 1% of the ocean, coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine life. They are a key component in a multitude of marine food chains and many fish use them for nurseries and shelter from predators. Not only do coral reefs protect marine life, they also protect the humans who live in coastal cities by providing a barrier between their homes and the the full wrath of hurricanes, storms and typhoons. Coral reefs are vital to our planet’s biodiversity, food security, economy and even our medicine, but they are quickly disappearing. About one fourth of the ocean’s coral reefs are already considered damaged beyond repair due to destructive fishing methods, careless tourism, pollution, and especially climate change as excessive carbon produced by man settles out in the ocean and makes the water more acidic. You can help save coral reefs by spreading the word and letting your leaders know that the fight against climate change is absolutely essential in order for all life on Earth to thrive.
