#Repost @littleoceantours Sea turtles leave the ocean for sandy beaches when they nest (Witherington, 1992). Since they are nocturnal nesters, both adults and hatchlings can be disoriented by artificial light on beaches (Raymond, 1984). Hatchlings have an instinct that leads them to the brightest direction, which is normally moonlight reflecting off the ocean, so overly developed beaches lined with lighted homes or street lamps disorient hatchlings from finding the sea (Mrosovsky et al., 1985). If the baby sea turtles move away from the ocean, they will not survive. Turning off lights on populated beaches can help survival of the newest generations of sea turtles!
