A German shepherd tied to a rusted gate, blackfish simmered with tomatoes on a grill, a scuba diver emerging from the waters of the Bronx: These are the scenes that inspire the poetry of David Ellis, the self-proclaimed Bard of City Island. He composes haiku on seashells and driftwood about the daily serendipity of the mile-and-a-half-long island in the Bronx, leaving them around the neighborhood. His works, locals say, add unexpected reflection to their day. Last January, David self-published a book of haiku called “Beach in City Island,” and now he’s working on a children’s edition, which his 6-year-old son, Gabriel, is illustrating. (“I did some crabs and I did some snails and a rainbow and some waves,” Gabriel offered as a progress report.) But David admits their forthcoming collaboration is mostly just a way for him to spend time with his son. “I tell myself every day: He’s not going to be 6 forever,” he said as Gabriel dashed down a beach. Ben Zucker (@saltysearabbit) took this portrait of David and Gabriel on the rocky shore of City Island off the eastern tip of the Bronx. #FathersDay
